Fall Sermon Series 2007
The Vestry recently authorized the creation of a banner to be displayed outside the church building that will list three things we want those who attend Trinity to experience: “Historic Faith; Joyful Worship; Caring Community.” Over the fall, Mr. Sutton will preach a series of sermons to describe what these elements are. If we want all who visit Trinity, or who attend regularly, to experience these things, it is a god idea to review them. The series could easily include other aspects of these three dimensions of parish life; if you would like to see more areas covered, please suggest an area to Mr. Sutton, who will try to address it after Advent and Christmas.

There will be a number of special speakers as well during the fall; the dates are given below, in parentheses.

Historic Faith (Sept. 9, 23-Oct. 7)

Sept. 9: The Authority and Reliability of Scripture

(Sept. 16: Speaker from “Food for the Poor.”)

Sept. 23: The Uniqueness of Jesus Christ

Sept. 30: The Trinity

Oct. 7: The Christian Moral Vision (with a focus on the issue of sexuality)

(Oct. 14: Special Speaker: John White, on “Legacy Stewardship.”)

Joyful Worship (Oct. 21 and 28)

Oct 21: The Joy of Seeing the Character of God

Oct. 28: The Joy of Honesty with God

Nov. 4, Financial Pledge Sunday – part both of “Joyful Worship and “Caring Community”)

Caring Community (Nov. 11 and 18)

Nov 11: Serving One Another in Love

Nov. 18: Applying God’s Mercy to Relational Difficulties

(Nov 25: Oded Cohen, of Jews for Jesus, speaking on “Christ and the Old Testament Feasts”)

Special Monthly Adult Education Event: “Anglican Communion News”

On the last Sunday of each month, Mr. Sutton will take the time following Coffee Hour to bring news and other information on the state of the Episcopal Church and the Anglican Communion. Last February, the Primates (Archbishops serving the 38 national/regional Churches whose beginnings came from the Church of England) asked the Episcopal bishops to give assurances of two things: 1) To refrain from consecrating anyone as bishop who is living in a same-sex relationship, and 2) To disapprove of any ceremonies designed to bless same-sex relationships. The deadline for such assurance is this September 30th. Whatever the Episcopal Church does in response to the Primates’ request will make a difference in the life of the Communion, and in the life of the Episcopal Church. It will take some time for the effects of the response to unfold, and these monthly Adult Education events will seek to track those effects. The first Special Adult Education Event will be on September 30th.

On other Sundays, the Adult Class will be studying the Book of Proverbs, a book of wisdom for living daily life. After Christmas, the Adult Class will be looking at a number of other topics.
